Standard German versus Swiss German ?
I plan to move to Switzerland, and I'm thinking of taking German courses in university. If i'm moving to Switzerland, is it worth while to learn Standard German when I'll need to know Swiss German in Switzerland? How different are the two dialects? Will I have trouble picking up Swiss German?
I can't understand Swiss German worth a damn. That being said, all of the Swiss people I have come in contact with, understand High German and have no problem speaking High German, so that I can understand them. However, when I read Swiss German, I can usually make out what they are saying. It's hearing it that makes it hard for me to understand.
