Ebay punter wants a refund due to postal damage... What to do?
I sold an old and rare digital watch on Ebay for £30 and £10 postage to someone in Germany. I packaged it well and sent it with Royal Mail Airsure. When he received it the LCD screen was damaged and now he's asking me what I'm going to do about it. I don't know if it can be repaired, the watch is very rare. I got an insurance form from the post office but it doesn't explain much to me and I have to wait 26 days or something before claiming. Do I have to give the guy a refund? In full or part? and if I do refund then what about the watch, does he have to post it back to me?
Please help me, I'm naive...
First off, a lot of buyers 'try it on', ESPECIALLY when dealing with a seller based in a 'foreign' country = so ask for photos of the damage so you can 'claim on the insurance' ... if the photo's look fake, tell him you will make a full refund after he posts the watch back (and wait for him to find a reason why not to return it).
If the photo's look legit, offer him whatever the postal insurance comes up with (he keeps the watch) OR a full refund if he returns it.
If you can't decide (or the postal insurance refuses to pay out) I suggest agreeing a partial refund if he keeps the watch or full if he returns it (he pays return postage)
I future I suggest restricting you auction to UK buyers only (less likely to be 'ripped off' when you could visit some-ones address in person ..)
